Carriage clocks are clocks that are typically rectangular in shape and moderate in size, and their real strength comes from their sturdiness, which was designed to withstand long trips by land or by sea. They are made to be carried on rough trips and pleasant trips alike, and though they saw a great deal of use during the nineteenth century when people traveled by carriage, the are still quite common today.

Highly fashionable around the end of the 1860s, they became common as presents during special occasions like birthdays, weddings, and also political and royal celebrations.

Even though it was simply categorized as merely travel clocks (for the most part), its actually a little larger than conventional travel timekeeping devices. Theyre designed that way so as to house and protect the spring driven mechanisms inside the clock.

When you want to make sure that you have an authentic travel clock, there are a few factors to look for. In the first place, most travel clocks are made out of brightly polished metal, like brass or silver. There is a glass window that makes it easier to read and though the hands are frequently painted a stark black, the porcelain face is usually painted with pastoral or natural scenes. You may find that the clock itself will be decorated with detailed and crafted figures that will make the overall design a little more fanciful, and this is most often true of the older clocks. Also look for the carrying handle, which is a big part of carriage clocks.

A lot of these clocks are made with some tunes or full songs (inside the clockworks) that mark the hours. With a wide array of notes and chords, some of them are even designed to play classical melodies (but theyre mostly just chimes). There are also large bells on top of these carriage clocks that sound every hour.

When you are looking at carriage clocks, you'll find that there are many options when you are looking at elaborate features. You may easily see inlaid enamel stamped scrolling, beautifully etched porcelain and even gemstones. Also look for scrolling leaf and branch designs.

Theyre so fashionably regal that when you look at them, youd know how distinctive they are. With such attributes, they can be used for decorative reasons like using them as mantel clocks or just simply shelf clocks. Theyre best used in antique-themed homes so as to complement the whole ambience.

When you are looking at modern clocks, especially, you'll discover that many of them have quartz movements rather than spring driven movements. The clear glass will often give you a great view of the internal workings and the design casings are sometimes stripped to give you a better look.

There are plenty of places that you can choose to get these clocks from, both online and off. Look for a company that has spent a lot of time making these clocks and that has a history with them You'll find that whether you go for a real antique or a brand new clock that hearkens back to an older time, you'll find that there are lots of choices out there for you!
