Christmas is the one special time of the year when everyone is happy to spend time together, eat too much, laugh too much and just enjoy each other. So many other traditions have disappeared, but collecting Christmas Nutcrackers continues to live on.
What exactly is a Christmas nutcracker? As the name suggests, these things are actually used to crack nuts open. Its history can date back to as early as 15th century. But these nutcrackers aren't your normal crack-me-opens; these are wood carvings of soldiers, knights, kings and many other things which have levers which open the soldiers mouth, where you can place the nut to crack it open.
Today's modern nutcrackers of course only offer decoration. But they have become a Christmas tradition in both Europe and the US. It's very popular in Germany to collect nutcrackers, as this is where they originated. Collecting Christmas Nutcrackers appeals to children and adults alike.
Sometimes something as simple as smelling a cup of hot chocolate will bring back a fond memory of sitting by fireplace listening to Christmas carols, looking at all the beautiful nutcrackers on display. You might remember ripping open a gift to find a new nutcracker to add to your own collection.
Although nowadays, collecting nutcrackers are only for the purpose of collecting it and not for cracking nuts anymore. There are many kinds of Christmas nutcrackers being produced today. Designs may range from soldiers to trees to cars to Santa Claus. The possibilities are absolutely limitless but to the serious collector, these collectibles are his or her passion.
There are several highly sought after collectible Christmas Nutcrackers, among them Steinbach and Ulbricht. These nutcrackers are exquisite, very detailed, and of course rather expensive, but worth it.
Today you can find all sorts of unique nutcrackers, with all kinds of bells and whistles. You can find entire sets of nutcrackers, but even if you have just one nutcracker, it will always remind you of a special Christmas. You might remember your Mother giving it to you, or someone else special to you. Christmas Nutcrackers always bring back fond memories.
