Dolls vary tremendously and have done so for centuries. There are toy dolls, comic book character dolls, and also cartoon and movie character dolls. There are dolls for collecting and there are antique-type dolls that have very high value.

Although dolls have been around for a long time they still are very popular - not only with children but with all age groups. At first they would have been produced from animal furs, or maybe clay or wood products. How far back do dolls go?

One doll has been found that dates back to pre-historic times in the middle east so it would appear that dolls have been popular even then. There are many remains from Roman times and also ancient Egyptian times and Greek ages.

In the sixteenth century dolls were popularly made from a variety of wood types and then in the eighteenth century paper mache and wax became popular in combination with wood materials. Porcelain then came into fashion and this tends to be the choice of material for those dolls with high financial value - the antique-type of doll.

These days, modern dolls are made from porcelain, plastics and a variety of other materials. There are dolls to resemble cartoon or comic characters. Others are made to showcase fashion styles. And then there are dolls to resemble characters from films, such as Edward and Bella in the Twilight movie. You can find a doll to suit almost any taste.

Barbie dolls are perhaps the most well-known dolls. These were introduced in the late 1950's and are still highly popular. They were at first produced for young girls but now all age groups collect them.

Dolls are particularly popular as collectibles. It may be a porcelain collection or it may be a Barbie collection - any collection is valuable to its owner for various reasons.

Whatever the reason for buying dolls, they continue to be treasured and loved by all age groups in every country.
